Description: VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland is a globally networked multi-technological contract research organization. VTT provides high-end technology solutions and innovation services that enhance the customers’ competitiveness, thereby creating prerequisites for society’s sustainable development, employment, and wellbeing.
The ICT and 5G testing facilities at VTT have been improved in 2018-2019 by commissioning a 5G test environment at the MultiPower laboratory including several test networks and communication emulators, remote interconnection to the Oulu smart grid laboratory and automated remote control of distant 300 kW loads. Additionally, DC grid interface for residential customers, weather station adjacent to the PV station and continuously controlled load bank have been commissioned at MultiPower. The control system is based on IEC61850 with GOOSE communication and other standard features. Time synchronization has been enhanced by installing a fiber connection to the atomic clocks at VTT MIKES, the National Metrology Institute of Finland, providing the UTC maintained by Finland.

Facilities
Electric vehicle and battery laboratory

Description: VTT has increased the operations in its vehicle laboratory in Espoo, Finland, to meet the development needs of electric vehicles. The new power supply unit mounted is capable of both simulating the battery system of a heavy electric vehicle and performing full-scale battery chargedischarge cycles. In addition, a totally new battery laboratory was opened in September 2012. It concentrates on measuring the performance of battery cells, modules, and complete energy storage systems for electric vehicles in a repeatable manner under variable controlled circumstances for different standardised and application-specific duty cycles. Electric vehicles and their powertrain can be studied in both laboratories jointly as an entity, including electric motors, electronics and batteries.

Static Equipment
Battery testing equipment

Description: Equipment for various testing of batteries. Circumstances like temperatures and charging profiles can be adjusted.

MultiPower

Description: MultiPower is a national empirical research environment where new technical solutions and products for distributed energy system can be tested in a multifunctional environment. There are several independent testing facilities connected together so that the environment may cover production, control and loading concepts. Research infrastructure for DER and other testing activities at VTT is called MultiPower system. The unit fromm MultiPower 100 kVA can be connected in parallel with a 1,6 MVA diesel generator and up to 1,7 MW resistor load into an internal island network. Connection to 20 kV network is possible, loading up to 200 kVA. The 1,6 MVA generator will act as a rigid network to which the other generating or consuming e. g. 100 kVA units can be synchronized.
