The European Commission`s Joint Research Centre (JRC) has a significant activity in the field of photovoltaics, which takes place in the Renewable Energy unit of the Institute for Energy. A major feature is the European Solar Test Installation (ESTI), which is a European reference laboratory for the verification of the power and energy generation of photovoltaic devices. Within the SOPHIA project, JRC is leading the networking sub-task on energy prediction and participate in the joint research activity on module lifetime, as well as offering access to its facilities.

R&D Nester (Centro de Investigação em Energia REN – State Grid, S.A.) is a research centre created through the partnership between REN (Redes Energéticas Nacionais), the Portuguese TSO, and State Grid Corporation of China, the Chinese TSO and DSO. As an energy research centre, R&D Nester’s mission is to provide an international platform for knowledge, delivering innovative solutions to be applied into energy systems; providing new tools, strategies and processes, well-tuned to the new energy paradigm, serving as a driving force towards more efficient and sustainable energy systems. R&D Nester main areas of research and expertise include: renewable energy management; smart grid technologies; power systems and communication systems simulation; power networks planning; power systems operation; energy markets and economics.
SINTEF Energy Research is part of the SINTEF Group, one of the largest non-profit research organizations in Northern Europe. SINTEF Energy Research is engaged in contract research in the national and international marketplace. Its R&D activities are focused on power production and energy converting, and also transmission and use of energy, including industrial processes and products, indoor climate and energy use in buildings. Issues concerning the deregulation of the electricity markets in Scandinavia and other parts of the world have for many years been a main activity. Contributions are also made to different energy related problems, which may arise onshore and offshore. These tasks range from system analysis to component and equipment assessments. SINTEF Energy Research has a staff of about 230 that ensures close co-operation between power engineering and mechanical engineering and focuses particularly on environmental issues. The institute has been a major actor on the energy research arena in the EU for many years.
The Institute of Energy Systems, Energy Efficiency and Energy Economics (ie3) is one of the leading German higher education institutes in the field of energy systems, energy efficiency and energy economy with the focus on electrical networks. The institute emerged out of the amalgamation of the Chair of Energy Systems and Energy Economy by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christian Rehtanz together with the RWE endowed professorship in Energy Efficiency and the related field of work of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Johanna Myrzik. Researches and studies solve technical and economic problems for a reliable and sustainable electricity system of the future.
As part of the Technical University of Dortmund, the institute receives public funding and has established cooperation with industry partners like RWE, Innogy, Amprion, Westnetz and PSI. The 1000m² lab is currently used by 40 employees of the institute and for the research activities a power range up to 160kW is available. In the years 2016 and 2017, large further expansions of the laboratory are planned.

Research areas include: testing and modelling power plant control systems. evaluation of the user factor; measuring type of load. Evaluating the technical and economical feasibility of several distribution automation systems. analysing robustness of power systems; development of automation systems for production and distribution facilities; and determination of the criteria for the development of power systems.
Merging the former LEG (Grenoble Power Electrical Laboratory), LEMD (Laboratory of Electrostatics and Dielectric Materials), and LMN (Laboratory of Magnetism of the Ship) in 2007, G2Elab nowadays covers a wide spectrum of expertise in the field Electrical Engineering. Its activity can be summarized by the following keywords: electrical energy, materials, innovative processes and systems, modeling and design methods and software. The research carried out in G2Elab ranges from long term research up to collaborative research supported by a strong involvement in partnerships with large companies and SMEs. With more than 100 permanent staff, 110 PhD and 50 Masters, G2Elab appears as a major actor both nationally and internationally in these areas.
