Description: The Centre for Renewable Energy Sources and Saving (CRES) is the Greek national centre for Renewable Energy Sources (RES), Rational Use of Energy (RUE) and Energy Saving (ES). CRES was instituted as the national coordination centre in its areas of activity by the Law 2244/94 (Production of Electricity from RES). CRES is a public entity, supervised by the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change, having, nevertheless, financial and administrative independence. During more than twenty years of its operation CRES has participated in more than 600 European and national projects. Today CRES has a scientific staff of more than 120 highly experienced and specialized scientists and engineers.
Battery Testing Laboratory
Description: Aim of the battery laboratory is the performance evaluation and characterisation of batteries operating under specified conditions, battery testing according to international standards (such as capacity or endurance tests) and the development of guidelines for the improvement of battery usage depending on the application.

Description: High rate discharge tester designed for the cold cranking test of 12V vehicle batteries. Its maximum discharge current is 1500A
Description: Life-cycle tester featuring six circuits capable of cycling a cell of 0V to 5V maximum and 0A to 1A current. Designed for testing small rechargeable AA size batteries, such as Li-Me, Li-ion etc.

Description: Battery temperature control system for the temperature regulation of a battery in the range -10oC to +60oC. Temperature control is fully automated and the bath dimensions are 1.80mX1.10m
Electric Vehicle Laboratory
Description: CRES is actively involved in testing, evaluation and dissemination of Electric Vehicles (EV). CRES has designed, developed and evaluated a Simplified Monitoring System (SMS) for performance monitoring of EV fleets with built-in GPS capable of performance evaluation and fleet management. CRES has received a patent for the SMS. CRES is also carrying out EV performance, energy consumption, battery testing and related studies. It also possesses laboratories for EV battery and electrical subsystems testing, such as battery units and battery management systems. Last year CRES participated in a report prepared for the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climatic Change, titled: “Investigating ways for the development and penetration of electric vehicles in Greece."
Hybrid system/Microgrid test site and PV systems Laboratory
Description: The Hybrid Power Plant and Microgrid laboratory is used in order to study the performance of stand-alone or interconnected microgrids, but also as a simulator of autonomous weak grids, like power systems of islands. The Microgrid is a low voltage 3-phase electric network where all DER components are connected. The communication and control is obtained through Interbus.
Description: 400 Vac, 50 Hz, 12.5 kVA. used as a backup system (stand-alone applications) or as one of the main generators for (e.g. for emulating CHP units)
Interconnection to the public grid
One desalination unit used as load
Description: 1.1 and 4.4 kWp. Both are interconnected through single phase inverters. Currently, the second unit is utilized partially using a 2.5kW single-phase inverter. In addition, the second unit is installed on a single-axis tracking system.
Description: This system consist of distributed Analog and Digital units communicating through Interbus. The supervision and data acquisition is obtained through a main computer in which a HMI through LabVIEW has been developed. Apart from the specific SCADA, the control utilizes the communication protocol from SMA for the SI inverters as well as Modbus protocol for communication of a power quality meter at the point of the public grid interconnection.
Description: The system is equipped with two separate battery banks as storage with the following features: One bank consists of 48 lead acid (FLA) battery cells of 2V and 400Ah each. The second battery system consists of 30 lead acid cells of 2V, 670Ah, connected in series.

Portable power quality meter
Description: A power quality meter is available, for the measurement of electrical power quality of grids during steady-state and transient events. The meter is designed to meet both the IEEE 1159 and IEC 61000-4-30 Class A standards for accuracy and measurement requirements. It can also monitor EN50160 compliance based on the EN (European) Standards.

PV testing laboratory
